Positive thinking is one of the essential keys to living a simpler life. And to the contrary, negative thoughts will make everything only worse. Smile at all troubles, and they will fade away as you’ll soon find a way to deal with them.

Also, try to learn to love yourself and accept yourself as you are. This doesn't mean, of course, that you can never try to better yourself. It simply means that you need to learn to love who you are at the moment.

Step One: Learn to Relax

Life goes so quickly and we get so involved in our day-to-day tasks that we often forget to relax. Our bodies, minds, and souls need time to relax and recharge. Take time each and every day to find some quiet time to unwind and relax. Listen to music, read a book, watch TV, work out, go for a walk, spend time with family and friends, do yoga, meditate, whatever works for you. But it is imperative that you set aside some time each and every day to relax and decompress from the day.

Step Two: Learn to Say “NO!”

Part of having a simpler life is to set boundaries. It may be hard for you to say no at first, and some people may not respect your boundaries right away, but you need to be firm. If you are constantly over-extending yourself, you will never be able to simplify your life. If something is outside of your comfort level and will cause you stress, take a stand and politely say no. Learning to set boundaries (and sticking to those boundaries) will greatly reduce anxiety in your day-to-day life.

Step Three: Declutter Your Life

We tend to let “things” take over our lives. We become consumed by owning more and wanting more. But in reality, possessions cannot make you happy. They will not grieve at you when you’re gone. People and memories are what matters. Making a difference in the world is the mark you will leave behind, not how many CDs you owned or how many pairs of designer jeans.

Declutter your life. Get rid of all of that stuff that is just staying in a pile collecting dust. Keep only what you need and give the rest to charity. Pay it forward. You will feel so much happier once you declutter your life.

Find what really makes you happy. Think about the time and place in your life when you were at your happiest. What made you feel that way? What values do you hold close to your heart? Make a list of the core values that mean the most to you. Rid yourself of anything that is holding you back.

While making a life plan is important, it is equally important to live in the present moment. Learn to love the life you have right now and savor every moment. Of course, you want to plan for the future, but don't let your life pass you by. Enjoy the present and embrace your life.

Practice mindfulness meditation. Simply close your eyes, take a deep breath and allow yourself to feel the moment! Life is too short to not celebrate every moment of every day!

Start a gratitude journal, and every day, write at least one thing that made you happy that day. Write about how it made you feel and what you learned. As you start to simplify your life, you will notice that you will find more and more things to be thankful for. Then you will notice that your stress, anxiety, and depression are starting to fade as your life becomes clearer.

Step Nine: Let Go of Toxic Relationships

Toxic relationships can be mentally and emotionally detrimental to our health. They can hold us back and bring us down. Let go of toxic relationships and surround yourself with those who love you and bring out the best in you. You will notice that once you rid yourself of negative and destructive relationships, you will feel happier and healthier.

Step Ten: Stick to Your Budget

Make a budget of your finances and stick to it. Set some money aside for emergencies. This doesn’t mean you can’t occasionally treat yourself, but remember, part of having a simple life is to declutter and downsize. Don’t buy more than you need. You will see that if you make a sensible budget and follow it, you will have peace of mind and a sense of security.
