DIY Remedies: How to Get Rid of Dark Circles
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil has many soothing benefits for our skin and our health. If you massage a little bit of extra virgin, organic coconut oil under your eyes when you first wake up and about half an hour before bed it can help eliminate (and prevent) dark circles, reduce puffiness and even help prevent laugh lines and wrinkles. Gently massage the coconut oil beneath your eyes and allow it to absorb into your skin. Do not rinse off.
2. Cucumber Slices
Although you remember seeing black and white movies where women are lounging around with cucumber slices over their eyes, this is not an old wives tale. Cucumbers are one of the main ingredients used in most face and eye masks at the fanciest health spas.
All you need to do is simply slice a chilled cucumber and place a slice over each eye. Allow them to stay there for 15 to 20 minutes.
If you don’t want to put cucumber slices over your eyes, you can extract the juice, soak some cotton balls or pads in the juice for a few minutes, throw the cotton balls in the fridge to chill and then apply them to your eyes.
Whichever method you choose, your eyes will thank you. Your skin will feel smooth and your dark circles will soon disappear.
3. Chilled Tea Bags
Both chamomile and green tea bags can help reduce eye bags. The caffeine in green tea will reduce puffiness and swelling while also tightening the skin. Chamomile contains anti-inflammatory properties than can greatly reduce swelling to help relieve tired eyes and reduce dark circles.
Soak 2 tea bags in water. Then allow them to chill in the refrigerator for half an hour before placing them over your closed eyelids for about ten minutes. You can repeat this process twice a day until you notice your dark circles disappear. You can use either green tea or chamomile, or use one in the morning and one at night. Either way, your tired eyes will thank you!
4. Almond Oil
Almond oil is very therapeutic for tired eyes as it soothes the delicate skin around your eyes. All you need to do is apply a drop of almond oil before bedtime and gently massage it into the skin around your eyes. In the morning, rinse your face with cold water. You can repeat this process daily until you notice the bags under your eyes are completely faded.
5. Cold Compress
A cold compress can help soothe your tired eyes and get rid of dark circles. Soak a soft cloth or two cotton balls in a glass of cold water and apply them to your eyes for fifteen minutes. Cold milk is an even better solution as it contains proteins and amino acids that can help soothe tired eyes.
6. Rose Water
Rose water is beneficial for our skin (and hair) as it can keep it shiny and healthy looking. It is also great for reducing dark circles and bags under your eyes. All you need to do is soak a cotton ball in rose water and let the cotton ball stay on your eyes (closed) for ten minutes. Your skin will feel supple and soft and your dark circles will disappear.
7. Apple Slices
You have heard the saying that “An apple a day will keep the doctor away.” Well, apples can also help keep those eye bags away. Apples contain tannic acid which helps eliminate dark circles. It can also provide additional nourishment to the skin surrounding our eyes, which is extremely delicate and sensitive.
Take two thin apple slices and place one over each closed eye for ten minutes. Rinse your eyes with lukewarm water and watch those dark circles fade away.
8. Raw Potato Slices
Potatoes can help nourish and rejuvenate our skin while eliminating dark circles and puffy eyes. They can also make the skin around our eyes firm and smooth.
Simply apply a potato slice over each eye (closed) for 20-30 minutes. Then rinse your eyes with cold water and gently pat dry (do not rub).
9. Tomato Juice and Lemon Juice
Both tomatoes and lemons are extremely useful in eliminating eye bags and making your skin smooth and supple. Simply mix one teaspoon each of lemon juice and tomato juice. Rub it gently under your eyes being careful not to get it in your eyes. Allow it to stay for ten minutes and then rinse your face with cool water. Your dark circles will soon start to fade.
10. Turmeric Powder and Pineapple Juice
Both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are naturally present in turmeric. Turmeric powder mixed with pineapple juice can not only eliminate dark circles and eye bags, but it can also soften and smooth the skin under your eyes.
Simply mix 2 teaspoons of turmeric powder with 2 teaspoons of pineapple juice to form a thick paste. Apply the mixture under your eyes. Let it stay for 10 minutes and then gently wash it off with a warm, damp and soft cloth.
